Easy American Buttercream

This classic crowd-pleaser is sweet, fluffy and easy to make.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened
  • cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbs milk
  • Dash salt (optional)

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, cream butter with a mixer until butter starts to lighten in color, 2-3 minutes.
  • Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, mix on low speed until incorporated. Raise speed to medium-high and continue to mix until smooth.
  • Add milk, vanilla and salt. Cream until light and fluffy, 3-5 minutes.
  • If buttercream is too thick, add more milk. If buttercream is too thin, add more confectioners’ sugar.

Notes

  • Sift confectioners' sugar to help get rid of any potential lumps
  • To help beat the heat of warmer and humid temperatures, add 1 Tbs meringue powder
  • Also to help in hot weather, use a combination of butter and shortening
